What it does
Cover the ground with a surface layer and a second layer underneath. It is a simple way to put grass over dirt while leaving deeper rock to another rule. When Depth surface measures from ceilings, the layers grow upward from the underside of the terrain instead.
Choose Surface and Subsurface, then adjust their depths to match the exposed terrain. Put Output before the deeper material in a Material Queue, so that rule can take over below the layers.
Inputs and outputs
| Name | Type | Default | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inputs | |||
| Surface | Material | grass_block | The material of the first layer, right at the surface. |
| Subsurface | Material | dirt | The material of the second layer, further into the terrain. |
| Surface depth | Integer | 1 · 1–2147483647 | Higher values make the top layer thicker. |
| Subsurface depth | Integer | 3 · 1–2147483647 | Higher values make the second layer thicker. |

| Depth surface | Choice | Floor | Chooses which terrain surface is used to measure depth. One of: Floor, Ceiling. |
| Output | |||
| Output | Material | The layered material near the surface, with no choice beyond the layers. | |
Good to know
Check the cave surfaces too
Inspect Depth surface when the world contains caves or floating terrain. The chosen surface reference determines which exposed faces receive the layers.
